Max number of pets?

I like to have 2 long term pets and one spot open for junk pets. You never know when there's going to be a new pet you want. Much less painful to just stable both pets and pick up a junker to get you to your tame spot.
This also allows you a chance to try various pets without the need to hit yourself upside the head for a bad swap. I learned that lesson after I swapped my star cat for a freaking "no hold hate" snap jaw...... The damn thing could not hold hate with anything even match or higher. Not to mention, it gets hard to level all of the pets so they keep up with your level.-Ayrianna 80 Nightelf Hunter - Queen of Typos

WoW: Hunter 70, Warrior 29, Druid 26, Warlock 22, Shaman 19 (all retired)

Back into FFXI while waiting for FFXIVWhat is the max number of pets a hunter can have at one time (cat and boar) but I really want a windserpent and dragonhawk. Is it possible to have more than 3? I don't plan on dropping my cat but could part with the boar- reminds me too much of lion king.
